There’s a lot of noise on the Internet. Check out my [this]. Listen to my new [that]. Tell me what you think about [the other thing]. Come to my [window]. (Sorry, bad Melissa Etheridge joke.) I’m sure you’re constantly saying in your head, as I am, “Of all the music/blogs/websites/X available to me online and off, I don’t have time to worry about your [this, that, the other thing, or window].”
Obviously the problem is that we haven’t been given a reason to. There’s no incentive.
Greg at Gen-Y Rockstars asks people to stop throwing up billboards to get attention and start giving people a reason to want to listen, read, watch, attend, engage, provide valuable feedback, buy, and RETURN. It may not be good enough anymore simply to be good at your craft. You have to identify what your audience wants in return and lure them in with it. Something free or discounted? Reciprocation? Exposure? I don’t care what you’re doing (yet); I want to know what I get out of it.
